Thoroughly confused this week after letting loose during the holidays.

Hi,

So I was diagnosed with Type 2 in early November. Had an A1C of 11.7. I was scared, but knew I had to make big changes. I decided to go without meds and try lifestyle changes first. I lost about 20-25lbs, went on a very low carb diet (not keto but not far from it either), ate no added sugar dur

It sounds like you’re finger testing and not wearing a CGM, which means there’s no way of knowing where your fluctuations really went. You could have gone higher before or after you tested. Wearing a CGM is the only way to see the full range of changes. But I do see that when my blood sugar has been controlled for a while, it seems to get more “resilient”: less fluctuating no matter what I eat. But after a few days of eating less controlled, it starts to get “bouncy” again.

Yes, finger testing. My insurance unfortunately would not cover the use of CGMs.

I usually finger test when I wake up, before I break my fast (16:8), and then 1 and 2 hours after eating and before bed, as well. sometimes I do a few more but try to stick to that at minimum.

I don't have insurance and am able to get a freestyle libre 3 for about $75 a month oop from HEB here in Texas. Idk if that's an option everywhere, but if that is within your budget it may be worth checking out.

Why are you testing when you wake up and again before you eat, but not 30, 60, or 90 minutes after eating? That's when you would see how high the meal spiked you. If you're waiting for 2 hours, you're essentially deciding that it doesn't matter how high the spike was as long as you're back down in range by the 2 hour mark. That's one way to look at it. But with an A1c as high as yours, it does matter if you're spiking to 140 or to 240.

Sounds like you’ll be ok! Good job getting the control you’ve gotten, over your glucose. Carry on!

Wow. People are just MEAN in this subreddit.

Good for you! Get back your diet now that the holidays are over. It was working for you. You may be one of the lucky ones that caught your disease early enough to make a major reversal. Don’t let these naysayers get you down.

Thank you! I am back on the wagon today for sure!

Mostly just enjoying the holidays with a little experimentation.

I do think I caught it early, I first began having symptoms between September/October, which prompted me to go see the doctor and get the bloodwork, and acted almost as soon as I got the bloodwork results.

This is similar to my case, although I’m still getting things fully under control.

I think a few things are in play here. I will start by saying that I highly doubt that an A1C of 11.7 was a false reading or inaccurate. I think the truth is that you have diabetes and it is a lifelong diagnosis.

That being said, your body can be resilient and since you had given your body a “break” from all of the sugar, carbs, etc, for 2ish months, it’s possible that your body is running more efficiently since you haven’t been continuously pounding your body. It’s important to note that this efficiency is temporary and your numbers will creep back up if you continue to test it.

Nice. Congrats on your success! It took me 14 months of low carb eating but I have finally gotten to the point of improved insulin sensitivity. It can happen. I had alcohol and a bunch of crappy food on New Years and never went over 115. It dropped back into the 70s the next day. I also use Freestyle Libre 2. My sugar level got the last 24 hours has been 81. It can happen.

I think the big reason it took me a lot longer to get to this point is that I was in denial of my diabetes for over a year prior to getting serious about working on my health.

The important thing is I have gotten here and I am back on track with my diet. I know that getting back into old routines will have me right back seeing sugar levels in the 200-300s.

Only med I've taken has been Benicar/Olmesarten for high blood

You can get both the Freestyle Libre and the Dexcom G7 CGMs for free on a one-time trial basis. Ask your doc to prescribe, register at the respective websites for the discount code for the pharmacy, and try them out. I did the Freestyle, and it was VERY helpful. I have the G7 and will be putting that to the test starting tomorrow.

Good luck!

I am happy for you! I fell off the wagon yesterday and am back on it today. All my finger tests where turning good numbers. Until this morning, I got 9.7. I don’t care since my diet is back on.

Have you repeated your A1C test? Possibly an inaccurately high reading? If it still tests high, continue your low carbs and exercise (now that the holidays are over) and continue to monitor. You may be fortunate enough to have caught this early and will be able to control and maintain without medication.

Good for you!!! 😎👍

East-Bit5814 · · 💙 3 Reply to comment

I have not repeated it yet. I will at the 3 month mark when my insurance allows it to go through.

I have the same goddamn issue. Like im not eating awful but not probably as strict as other type 2s and my numbers are never bad. I just dont understand it. My A1C is in good range but I always feel like shit after i eat.
