Diabetes diagnosis is brutal and you’re not the first person this happens to — but not taking insulin with Type 1 can turn into DKA fast, even if you feel fine. If your CGM is reading high, you have vomiting/abdominal pain, deep/fast breathing, fruity breath, or you can check ketones and they’re positive: get urgent care / ER today, don’t wait 2 days.

At the appointment, ask for: • a simple “minimum plan” for bad mental-health days (so you don’t go to zero insulin) • how/when to check ketones and what numbers = urgent • referral to a diabetes educator + mental health support (someone who gets T1) • permission for your endo + psychiatrist to coordinate meds for sleep/anxiety safely

Wishing you luck — first months of T1 are chaos, and you deserve as much support as you can stack.

You’re not alone, and it makes sense that this feels overwhelming. A new diagnosis is a huge mental shock and a lot of people really struggle at the start.

At your endo appointment, just be honest. Explain that you stopped taking insulin and checking your sugars because your anxiety and depression became too much. Say that the constant monitoring is making it hard to sleep and messing with your mental health, and that you’re just having a hard time coping overall.

Make it clear you’re not ignoring your diabetes on purpose, you’re struggling and need support for your mental health too, not just blood sugar numbers. Asking for help now doesn’t mean you’re failing, it means you’re trying to take care of yourself. You deserve help, not judgment.

Do you have access to a therapist or counseling? Type 1 diagnosis can be overwhelming, but it's also very serious. Ignoring it does not make the serious health risks go away, as you can see with your problems with blurry vision, numb feet, and weight loss still being present. I understand being anxious about using insulin and the stress of staying on top of blood sugar. Part of the reason I sometimes feel stressed about managing blood sugar though is because if I mess up, then I could end up going into DKA which is incredibly painful as your blood becomes acidic. Personally that's something I want to avoid. When you see your endo, depending on where you live you might be able to get a pump that works with the CGM so that you have less work to do and less thought to put into insulin dosing.

I would talk to your endo about getting a pump. It makes life as a type 1 so much easier. Even if you are having a really bad day it will work out the basal dosage so you won't need the basal insulin and it makes dosing easy. You just give it your best guess on the carbs you are eating and it does the rest.

I have had days like that as a diabetic and I can say for sure that a pump is the best tool you will have your toolbox.

I’m already extremely overwhelmed and underweight I’m scared there are other issues I can’t drive nor walk for long to to blurriness and my feet going numb. I’m also in the military which makes everything a million times harder. Everything just feels fucked up

Right now, focus on staying safe. Check your blood sugar once or twice, eat something and write down what’s happening for your endo.

It’s okay to be scared about the future. You’re not alone and your doctors can help you figure out a plan step by step. You don’t have to handle all of this at once!

Thanks I just am over it I also talked to a nutritionist last week and she gave me a plan including taking notes of blood sugar before and after meals plus counting the carbs and when I need to eat snacks but I haven’t done anything. Past couple days I’ve been skipping breakfast and lunch. Eating no snacks idk what to do with my self. I’m supposed to have an appointment with her the day after the endo appointment.

You can try something concrete and doable right now, before your endo.

  • Don’t try to do everything at once. Just check your blood sugar once or twice today and write it down. You can also use apps like Dexcom Clarity, Gluroo to see patterns. That’s enough for now.

  • Try to have at least one small meal or snack, even something simple, so your body doesn’t get too stressed. Apps like SNAQ or Foodvisor let you just take a photo and they estimate the carbs, which can make logging easier.

  • Bring what’s happening to your endo exactly as it is, skipping meals, not counting carbs, feeling lost. That way they can help you figure out a plan that fits how you’re actually c
