Evidence/factual based, in-depth books on diabetes?

shared by: mainebingo · · 💙 3 · 💬 16 · Join the discussion

I think I’m smarter than I am and want to understand everything about my diabetes: cause, effect, and what to do to manage it. I’m drawn to books that are factual, study-based, and in depth. I want to understand the “whys” behind the advice given. Does anyone have any books they can recommend?

Well depending upon how in depth you want to go, I would recommend on line research sites such as

sciencedirect.com, Wiley online library, MDPI open access Journals, National Library of Medicine etc. as very good starting points. You can use an AI search engine to ask very specific questions and obtain specific answers and references. That would be my starting point rather than a specific book.

Not really what you asked about, but have you used a CGM? I learned more about my body, blood sugar and diabetes in 10 days with a CGM than any amount of reading and blood tests ever taught me.

Yes, and I agree. It made me want to learn more.

I was diagnosed with type 2 and read deep books to really know why this happens and what to do. I read Think Like a Pancreas and Dr Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution and felt empowered. I wanted evidence and studies not quick fixes. These books helped me grasp cause and effect and gave real science behind advice. They changed how I manage food exercise and glucose and made me feel in control.

I am going to go off script here and will also recommend a documentary that will give you some food for thought. While not specifically about Diabetes, its very good at giving a vantage point of how we (the USA anyway) got here. Every documentary can have a slant/bias, but it will give some good things to consider.... I use this for further research and review, especially when studies and researchers are mentioned...

Shows how social media can make people superhero. Her basic points are straightforward and useful. but none are her own. Yet the following she gets is mind boggling. There is a lot behind the scene including heavy social media engineering and campaign.

The information in the book is useful and well presented. She doesn't claim it's original research.

Fair point. I don't dislike her, but just think she is a bit overrated.

The suppliments she is selling now haven't been tested in any way at all and when she markets them, she tells people that their blood sugar should be a straight line, which is rubbish. And she's trying to sell these to people who don't even have issues with their blood sugar. She really infuriates me

Yeah, that flat lining target is unfortunately peddled by many including her. It is not backed by science and giving people unrealistic and downright wrong targets (diabetic or not). I cldnt care less about her supplements so I haven't looked into it. I totally believe you on that though. Most supplement peddlers are in the same boat.
