Found out two weeks ago that my GP should have diagnosed me with type 2 in april, but failed or neglected to do so. That resulted in a possibly related health incident that sent me to the urgent care and thats where we found out about my situation. Following that I got an appointment with a diabet

I use Metamucil (Costco version) at least once per day. I’ll add a second dose if I want to have a higher carb meal. It does help slow down any spikes, but everyone is different. I also find it difficult to get enough fiber from food.

arrec · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

I take Metamucil 4-in-1, sugar free, every day. It makes such a difference. I do eat a fair amount of vegetables (I'm a vegetarian) but it's just hard to get enough fiber through diet.

Working-on-it12 · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

Same here. I use the caplet version since I have similar food issues.

psoriasaurus_rex · · 💙 14 Reply to comment

Most lettuces don’t actually have much fiber, so forcing lettuce to get fiber in doesn’t really accomplish the goal.

How are you with nuts and seeds? Those tend to be pretty high in fiber.  For beans, you might try soy beans/edamame.  They have a very different texture than other beans.

Maybe look at adding some high fiber whole grains to your diet.  Look up the fiber content and see if they might meet your needs.

I take fiber capsules with my meals, if you don’t have an issue with pills or water they might help.

Chia seeds and berries are the best and easiest sources of fiber in my diet. Every morning for breakfast, I have unsweetened yogurt with blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries (I buy them fresh and stash them in the freezer as I find they are just like eating fresh berries when they thaw). I will mix Chia seeds with a little bit of milk, half-and-half, or water to get them to hydrate and then mix them in with my yogurt. I also use them to make smoothies.

Lately for dinner, since it’s winter time, I’ve been roasting of variety of veggies, including everything from tomatoes to butternut squash, along with onions, a head of garlic, and other things like carrots, sweet peppers, etc., (I’ve been playing with different combos, but everything includes onion and garlic) and then I blend them a

The roasted veggie soups are so good. I tried leeks the other day instead of my regular onion and it was good!

I was pondering what kind of veggies I’d use this summer since I’ve been using a lot of squash for these roasted veggie soups.

cocteau17 · · 💙 3 Reply to comment

I made one with butternut squash and sweet potatoes that was good, and then I did one with turnips, leeks, onion, garlic, carrots, golden beets, and parsnips, and I liked it other than the turnips, they gave it a weird flavor – won’t make that mistake again. I think it would be great without them.

But my standby is tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, and to that I usually add a can of tomato paste and maybe a can of diced tomatoes as well.

I would also suggest a fiber supplement like psyllium if you have food issues getting in the way. AuDHD here too, and I definitely get it.

Blaming yourself for getting sick really won't make anything better. The extra stress more likely to do harm. It's just something else to deal with now, however it happened. (Rarely that direct a thing anyway, tbqh.) The important thing is figuring out what works for you managing it. And neurodivergent eating issues are a totally valid consideration. What works for you may well look a little different. Best of luck!

Spinach wilted down in any dish is really great for me. I tell people to just eat the vegetables you like and change out the sauces/seasonings so you don’t get bored.

There are also fiber pills you can supplement along with vegetables. Definitely not a replacement for vegetables though.

talatta · · 💙 6 Reply to comment

Chia seeds your can add them to almost anything.. salads, yogurt, pudding, juices and smoothies .. I'm sure there a lot of other things also. P.s. with any fiber supplements make sure to drank enough water..

I make a carb free dip and eat raw veggies with it. I used to hate vegetables too but now I rely on them so much. I ranted about how much I hated broccoli and celery. My family laughs at me consuming them at family parties. I can’t eat most the stuff they do but they DO make my fav dip and have lots of fresh veggies.

I was also extremely angry to have to make diet changes and until my glp-1 silenced my food noise I couldn’t really make the changes.

I empathize and hope you find a way.

OrganizationBrave311 · · 💙 5 Reply to comment

I like to eat vegetables first rather than mix them into my dinner. A cup of roasted broccoli or brussel sprouts before eating the actual dinner I want.

I take Benefiber, Walmart version. I find it very helpful.

human72949626383 · · 💙 3 Reply to comment

I read a line early in my diagnosis that set the tone for me: eat your food as your medicine or take medicine to eat your food.

I now find new foods based on tiny things I want to change - the whole start small thing really works.

I, too, am not a big lettuce fan- so I started with beans. Black beans are good, then I saw the whole bean salad trend and tried a few of those. Carrots and guacamole at lunch time was surprisingly good. I started cutting carrots once a week and bringing it for lunches. Eat my carrots first, listen to my body and stop eating when I’m full.

Recently I added prunes and holy guacamole what another level of fiber those bring. I started adding them to smoothies and yogurt for the bone density support they offer.

Don’t view this as a sprint to health but buildi

Fiber supplements come in pill form, gummies, or a powder you can add to water.   Work your way up in dosage and don't over do it (you can get constipated).

No-Pirate-6460 · · 💙 2 Reply to comment

Try eating fresh spinach. I use it in place of lettuce. Also, sauteed with a little garlic is good.

shootathought · · 💙 2 Reply to comment

High fiber tortillas and breads are a great way to get your fiber in. La tortilla factory makes great tortillas with like 14g fiber, and very low net carbs.

If you're a soda fan, I just discovered that ollipop has about 9g fiber in a can, for a fairly low calorie count. So maybe one a day?

RandomThyme · · 💙 2 Reply to comment

I have veggies with just about every meal and snack to the tune of nearly 2lbs per day. I very rarely eat lettuce or salads. The key is to start small. Just add you favourite veggie to one meal once a day. Then add a different veggie to another meal. If you are trying a new veggie that you might not like, have some of your favorite one on standby.

I prefer to eat salads during the summer and not the winter.

I eat the majority of my veggies raw. I eat an absolute tone of cucumbers, 1- 1.5 in a day. I slice them up have them plain or with a little vinegar drizzled on them with a bit of salt. If you don't mind spice, a little bit of Tajin with a sprinkle of lemon juice is really tasty.

Raw carrots, cherry tomatoes and bell peppers are my go tos as well.

How are you with cabbage? I like i

Benefiber mixes into drinks and it’s clear/tasteless. They make packets on the go so you can start with 1 a day and work your way up.

I roast celery, tomato, carrots, peppers, garlic, mushrooms and onions with a little olive oil then blend them together and let them simmer. It makes a great Spagetti sauce but you can use it with a lot of things.

No preservatives or texture issues.

Metamucil is awful. I cannot choke it down. Like I’ll never poop again rather than drink a glass of Metamucil. 😂

I take 3 fiber gummies before bed. I also take Mounjaro so I can get constipated. If I am, I take 5 fiber gummies.

Prunes are good too.

A few options I use when I just cant/dont want to eat IF you are in the US:

  • Morning: Country Farm sugar free Fiber gummies (6g of fiber in 3 gummies).

  • Shameless Snacks sour gummy candy (26g of fiber per 17-ish gummy serving) WARNING:THIS IS 'CANDY' WITH SUGAR ALCOHOLS.

  • Sola Bread/Bagels have high fiber.

Im not a doctor and would say to eat these with caution and TEST TEST TEST your BG to see how your body reacts!

I say this to newly diagnosed. Do not change your diet. People do not keep up at them. Eat smaller portions of foods you eat already. Reduce foods that spike sugars. Take meds.

The most important thing is to eat foos that do not spike sugars. Sugar pop, carbs, and other things will spike sugars. If you reduce bad foods, sugars will not spike as much. That is the start.

The benefit of fiber is it slows absorption of glucose so bs is slowly released. If you reduce bad foods, fiber does not do much.

Diabetic nutrition is complicated. You cannot do just one thing. 20 years diabetic. Recently i changed to a diabetic and kidney friendly diet. It has taken 9 months so far.

WaltonGogginsTeeth · · 💙 3 Reply to comment

It is possible to change your diet. I changed mine completely and so did a lot of other folks who were able to get into the low 5s A1C I know. It’s been well over a year for me and I’ve not had a “cheat” meal once. Not everyone seems to be able to do that but a newly diagnosed needs to cut out a good percentage of refined carbs. Maybe not all but something needs to change if we wish to recover.

Good job.

To larify my comment, i should have sauid not to change your diet immediately, it takes a lot of effort, knowledge, to do it. Diet chnages also require self discipline

Find a salad dressing you like & put it on. Salad will taste like the dressing. I cut up salad twice a week- green beans, carrots, celery, peppers, broccoli, & yes, romaine hearts. I have become enamored with the moisture within vegetables. Our bodies are mostly water. Veggies are the best food for our bodies. The perfect food plate is half veggies. It is zero carbs except a little for dressing. I put my veggies in a gallon bag, so I always have some. I have come to appreciate & enjoy vegetables. Give it a try & don’t prejudge those veggies. You will feel better just by eating healthier.

I buy whole flax seeds. I grind about two to three cups in a coffee grinder a couple of times a week.

I then add a tablespoon or two to cereal, hot chocolate, yogurt, and peanut butter. Also peanut butter has a significant amount of fiber as well. But all in all this seems to help with my fiber intake.

Also, grounded flax seed seems to have a lot of other benefits. Anti inflammatory benefits. Lower bad cholesterol, due to the level of fiber in it. Amongst other things

okay. this is my hot take, but I hope it helps!

been type-1 diabetic my entire life, not sure if I'm ADHD but believe so, we can completely ignore that, but it's affected my life so much that recently I'm going to seek assistance with it. had a stroke 10+ years ago etc.

with all the complications, I discovered I have brutal anemia and low iron, and longstory, less long, I ended up adding fiber to my diet. a cup of veggies with each meal will do it. I have been using those 1$ frozen veggie packs, peas+carrots, or greenbeans+corn+carrots etc. this for me was good, and I would add pepper and maybe some citrus if I need to add some flavor, but the veggies alone in combination with a good protein has been working really really good for me.

If you hate veggies go carnivore and drink Metamucil. Fiber is helpful for bowel issues but is not an essential nutrient for humans.

If you like to cook (many foodies do!) , I encourage you to experiment with almond flour recipes. Many flatbread recipes (pizza, scallion pancake, etc) use psyllium husk as a binding agent - same ingredient as in metamucil!

Here's an almond flour roti I enjoyed: https://spicecravings.com/keto-roti

Hi friend! I certainly understand the textural nightmare with neurodivergence and some foods, and just wanna start by saying what works for you will work for you, and there isn’t any one perfect way of finding a way to put more fibre in your diet!

That being said, all of these questions would be best suited for a nutritionist or taking a course on fibre in nutrition to find what foods have a good amount of fibre that you like. As someone said, lettuce for example doesn’t actually have a high amount of fibre but the broccoli, asparagus, etc type foods are really good for that! You said you don’t like beans etc, but there are some good pastas made of chickpeas that are a good fibre alternative! There’s also some fruits that are really good for fibre, and aren’t too bad for sugar spikes, li

I grew up in a household where we never ate vegetables. I HATED them. Here’s what I did: I gave up all processed food cold turkey. The first week was HORRIBLE, the second week was bad, the third was where I started adjusting. After the third week, I began to really appreciate the flavor of veg and now, any time I eat processed food-it tastes like preservatives and chemicals and does not appeal to me. Basically the first month is hell though.

If a diagnosis of diabetes doesnt shit-scare you into eating better, I dont know what will.

(speaking as someone in a simialr position to you - diagnosed at 8.7 in April- I hated veggies, but now I eat them all the time)
