How to start eating well when I don’t want to eat at all

My doctor was very insistent that I try Ozempic because my blood sugar wasn’t adequately controlled by Jardiance and Metformin. It wasn’t controlled because of my diet.

I take Adderall for ADHD, so it’s not unusual for me not to eat all day, and graham crackers and bagels are staples in my diet. N

I feel this deep in my soul. A combination of food anxiety (food is poison) and Vyvanse have me feeling absolutely nauseated at the mere thought of food most days. I'm not a picky eater in the classic sense bc I like a wide variety of food, but I am picky in the sense that I would rather not eat than eat something I don't like.

Ensure is absolutely an option. Huel and Soylent are also options. I have multiple friends who use these for this exact situation. If you can get it down and keep it down, it's okay to rely on it for a bit. It's very important to get enough protein when you're on an appetite reducer like Adderall and Ozempic, I cannot stress this enough.

Personally I mostly rely on cheese. It's low carb, has protein, and is usually appetizing enough for me to eat a little, which

Graham crackers and bagels are both pure sugar and will send your glucose into orbit. Neither has anything close to nutrition. You'll need to find some nutritious food if you want to manage your diabetes. Ensure is disgusting but hey, if it works. If you want to manage this, you'll have to start eating like an adult.

Rapid weight loss is dangerous but so it going on like you are. Also, the time of day you're eating makes a difference. It's extremely unhealthy to load up on carbs right before bedtime. Good luck.

I understand that eating when your not hungry or dont feel like it really sucks. When I was getting used to eating breakfast, sometimes I would find that I may not be hungry at the start of preparing the meal but by the time I was done making it I would actually be hungry.

I would recommend trying different protein bars if you can tolerate them.

I really like the barebells(my favourite currently isbthe key lime pie one) but the pure protein ones are OK. They both typically have equal amounts of protein and carbs, around 20g of each.

Do you like any veggies? Things like snap peas, baby cut carrots or cherry tomatoes make an easy snack with little to no preparation.

We can turn that begal into a sandwich with some sliced meat & sliced cheese & you're favourite sauce or a super simple tun

I would work on slowly expanding your diet. Are there things you can add to bagels to make them more well rounded with protein and fat? Like an egg sandwich or ham and cheese, peanut butter or cream cheese. There are cheese only crackers like whisps that are low carb. Getting things that can be frozen or are pantry stable so that you can eat a bite or two of it at a time until you get more used to it. Maybe also ask about adding an appetite stimulant to counteract the adderall, if you think that might help you eat more foods vs just be more hungry for the same foods.

When I don't feel like eating, I have some cans of a pre-mixed salmon and quinoa that I got in the tuna section of the grocery store. They are ready to eat and there are variations that you might like. They aren't visually appealing, but they do get some protein in you.

Rotissery chicken and frozen veg might also be a non-fuss way for you to eat. I usually get the cooked chicken that has been deboned in the deli.

It's good that you are thinking about nutrition!

First decide if you want to change your food. Really decide. If not, dont even bother pretending to yourself that you do.

A good way you xan approach it is to make a list of foods or meals to try. With your CGM, eat just one of them and note the result and use rhat to build a list of foods thst are acceptable and unacceptable based on the CGM response. And then note whether your be willing to eat it again. Do that enough to build a list of foods to choose from.

Whatever it ends up being, dont lie to yourself like you do when you eat graham crackers and bagels - 2 of the worst foods for a t2 to eat. No need to waste that time and energy.

When I first started Oz I basically lived off Fairlife protein shakes. I've been on it for a while now & it's still keeping my sugar in control but the worst of the don't want to eat phase has passed.

This is a tough one and there's no one right answer. I struggle with my appetite due to my ADHD meds too and lunch is usually a weird meal for me.

I ended up buying meal replacements that are quick to make and easy to get down. I regularly consume Huel shakes (powder + milk of choice or water in a blender and go) which I just mindlessly drink while doing something else. It's plant based and has a ton of fiber and is nutritionally complete so I get a legitimate whole meal out of it. It shouldn't replace someone's entire diet though, but when my appetite is curbed I can at least get that down easy enough.

I also think that at this stage, depending on the desire to eat isn't the way to go. Snacking on things that taste okay or good is better than not eating at all. If you like fruit, eat a

Sola bagels and real cream cheese?! Find things you can stomach. String cheese, nuts, a serving of simple mills almond flour cookies

If you can’t eat, yes do a meal replacement shake, protein shake, smoothie, etc.

This will hopefully pass as you become acclimated to Ozempic, but if it doesn’t, talk to your doc about alternatives.

Yeah. I had to tell the doc absolutely not on Ozempic because of this. I am also a picky eater and I just would not eat when I was on it. My therapist recommended Slim Fast shakes so that I was at least getting *some* nutrients. I also kept string cheese and almonds because those were easy to grab and basically okay to mindlessly snack on. If it took longer than 3 minutes to put together then I couldn't be bothered.

Like others have said, find some safe foods that are a bit more healthy and keep those around. Maybe portion them out into smaller snack sizes so you don't feel like you're forcing yourself to eat a ton. If you're gonna eat graham crackers, maybe some peanut butter too for protein?

How about putting a reminder on your phone or watch. Just saying. Ozempic did the same thing to me but at some point it stops making you loose weight. For me it was 65 pounds.

AntGroundbreaking102 · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

i’ve done that before and it didn’t work. my stomach and brain aren’t connected very well so i never know when i’m hungry. i’ll get busy doing something then next thing i know im in bed. always had the problem. since long before a diagnosis but it’s gotten worse. sometimes i’ll forget so much, three or four days have passed before i’m wondering when the last time i ate was

All I can say is that responders are very much trying to help you and understand certain limitations that you can express. In order to control your diabetes something has got to give. I whish you good luck.
