I had no idea Dexcom 15 day sensors were a thing, let alone already out

I stay pretty up to date on diabetes news and never heard about the 15 day sensors. I got this notification this morning. On one hand, I am pumped, because it’s just a little less to worry about. On the other, I wish Dexcom would focus on quality control first because extending sensor life. My batch

This is actually pretty nice news. I had been using Stelos out of pocket for a bit but got insurance to cover G7s without a pump (for now at least) and was bummed that they only lasted 10 days compared to the stelos 15.

Switching them isnt an issue, but them being inaccurate AF the first day means the fewer first days the better to me.

Maybe Dexcom should focus on fixing reliability problems with the normal G7. This is definitely a pass from me.

I’ve had very very few issues. I don’t know why I always hear people having problems

I get 3 x G7 a month, and have had 2 go bad in 1 month. That left me without a cgm for about 10 days. If 1 or 2 of the "15 day" ones go bad how long will you be without a cgm?

I get a 90 day supply + they last 15.5 days so I can build up an extra.

Odd-Page-7866 · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

They're going to figure the 15.5 days into your RX and reduce the # of sensors you get.

GC-Retired · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

Not really. Just received ‘6’ new 15 day G7’s for 90 day supply. For over a year on my 10 day G7’s never received less then my normal 90 day supply & was able to stockpile a few as they lasted 10.5 days. They always assume you rerun out of normal supply @ 90 days

Just an fyi, these don’t work with pumps yet.

I haven’t had any issues with my G7s. But longer wear times mean fewer sensors covered by insurance.

If you take it to an extreme, and say what happens if they had a G7 365 day? Insurance would cover 1. What happens if on day 5 it falls off? Then day 25 another one gets knocked off? Etc. those would all be on you to replace, I imagine.

For me, longer wear times aren’t important. Changing a Dexcom is already so fast and easy, and with the overlapping warmup, you have constant values. I’d rather not have to change it daily, but if it were only 3 days, like my pump? Wouldn’t really bother me (outside of packing for a trip).

I don't know about any others but I know that Omnipod 5 claims to already support the G7 15-day sensors, so there's that at least.

Other than that though, I share the same concern about the longer-lasting sensors meaning having fewer on hand if something goes wrong. I just don't know that I'd be able to have peace of mind if this meant not having an immediate backup sensor available in the latter half of any particular month.

15 day G7 works with Omnipod currently.

That’s a stupid hypothetical just because there’s no adhesive or overpatch that’s going to last that long. Additionally, if you follow all of dexcom instructions, they are liable for the warranty if the sensor fails to last for the duration. You should know that

Dexcom sent me two free replacements for sensors that fell and or failed to deploy. Just call them.

truthiness- · · 💙 3 Reply to comment

Yes, they offer I think 3 courtesy replacements per year for thing’s that are users fault. As I said, I don’t really have that issue. I was simply illustrating that a longer wear time may lead to people requiring more of these, which would then be out of pocket costs.

WhySheHateMe · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

It wasn't my fault that those sensors failed, the G7 actually has a known issue where the needle doesnt deploy properly and the plastic tube that goes in your skin gets pushed out of the hole on the back of the sensor. Theres an entry for that issue when you tell them whats wrong.

Im glad you dont have "that issue" though.

If your sensor falls off, or gets knocked of, that’s usually on the user (this is what I was commenting on - the adhesive is very strong on my skin and I don’t have this issue. Others unfortunately do have this issue.). Dexcom will replace 3 of those per year for free.

If your sensor fails or errors out, (e.g. ‘goose neck’ as you mentioned, which just happened to me yesterday.) etc., that’s usually on Dexcom and they will always replace those for free, no maximum.

I'm genuinely curious if they're 1.6 x more $$$ OOP sense they last 15 days or if they're feasibly cheaper by costing the same as a 9 day sensor.

RainbowGravity92 · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

They're pretty recent as far as I know. Really cool that they worked on extending the time for operational time.

I have a good friend who works for Dexcom and a few months ago she hinted at this new version. I mention I had a couple sensors that were faulty and she said she couldn’t go into details but said stay tuned. I did notice i haven’t had any bad sensors lately. Not sure if thats a coincidence or just lucky. O

If they work better than the 10 day great. I had hardly any issues with the G6 and one year of the G7. The last month has been shit. 6 failures, so pissed. I know many folks have had worse than me.

From the email my wife got they stated that about 1/4 failed to make the full 15 days so she's in no hurry to change.

I wish I could do one of these things. But I just know I'mma rip that thing right out in my sleep.

Not to say you're wrong, but have you actually tried them? (Your phrasing suggests you haven't, which is fine! Just wondering.)

The adhesive has gotten pretty freaking good over the last years to the point where when the 10 days are up I always feel I'm taking an entire patch of skin off with the sensor lol. They're not that easy to knock off anymore. I also wear my sensor on the front of my upper arm instead of on the back because I get more reliable readings there and it's less likely to rub onto anything.

There are some free trial sensors you can get your hands on to see?

OSTBear · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

Not the sensor specifically, but they gave me the same adhesive pads for an EKG setup I had to take home. They had to give me those adhesive pads because I kept ripping the EKG pads off in the night... And then I ripped the adhesive pads off in the night anyway :P. Hurt like hell and woke me out of a dead sleep lol.

pashed_motatoes · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

I used to do this with my CPAP mask. And many years ago, as a teen who had to wear a retainer at night, I would always rip it out and throw it across the room in my sleep… oops 😅

OSTBear · · 💙 1 Reply to comment

I had to get a growth surgically removed from my arm because I would wake up in the morning covered in blood because in the middle of the night I picked at it.

I don't use a CGM anymore but why 15 days and not 14.

When I was using a g6, I would have loved a consistent sensor change day

I think 30 days makes more sense for insurance coverage purposes. It's also divisible by the 10 days of the G7 and G6.
