Did they give you a diagnosis of type 1/2? Make sure you get that figured out correctly. Many doctors incorrectly assume type 2 when you’re not a child

Yes type 2. He said it's extremely rare in people as young as me

Did they actually test you? You don’t sound like a typical T2. There are other kinds of diabetes too—are either of your parents diabetic? MODY is just as common as T1 but rarely diagnosed

Make sure they actually tested for type 1 with a c-peptide and antibody test.

OP - I will also say, your future does not automatically require lifetime medications. If you make meaningful changes to lifestyle and diet, I have a number of friends that were able to get their A1C into non-diabetic range and stay off of meds. I want to emphasize, it took a lot of work and required a lifetime of diligence for them to not slip back into diabetic range. I just wanted to share it is possible!! Best of luck on your journey - this community is great to help understand and manage the disease.

This is why diabetes is called the silent killer. Six years ago when I was 59, I was a healthy weight, exercised regularly and ate well. I attended a health fair and my glucose was 398. I went to my doctor and was diagnosed as T2 because of my age. Further tests showed I was T1. Now I’m on insulin for the rest of my life. It sucks. Good luck with your health journey.

T2 is quite rare in people of your age and build. Just echoing the advice to make sure you’re actually screened for T1 - misdiagnosis is common and makes treatment difficult.

Normalizing blood sugar can definitely improve mental health. I had debilitating anxiety during my years of missed diagnosis and it went away with no other treatment than diabetes management.
