Ascensia Contour vs Abbott Freestyle Meter

shared by: maddgun · · 💙 3 · 💬 5 · Join the discussion

As of Jan 1, my insurance no longer covers one touch ultra 2 supplies (which I have used for years). I have the option of Ascensia Contour and Abbott Freestyle Meter, which are now covered as a substitute. Which one is more accurate? Which one would you choose?

With regards to accuracy I can't speak (though I'm sure there are technical requirements imposed by governments), but personally I've always been haply with my Contour meters. They talk to my phone via Bluetooth and need only very little blood, with a chance to add more of you didn't get enough.

That's a good reason, thanks. I just learned about the second chance to add more blood feature without wasting the entire strip. It's pretty cool - the One Touch Ultra 2 did not have this feature

Freestyle strips come individually wrapped (joined together in a sheet with perforations). Contour strips come in a canister. I'm not in love with the extra waste, but I do find the sheets more compact.

Not all Contour meters have Bluetooth, but some do, so check which meter they pay for before making that a deciding factor. (Some work with MySugr, too, if you use that.) None of the Freestyle meters do, as far as I know. Contour strips tend to be cheaper out of pocket, but both are readily available if you're worried about getting caught out and needing to just buy some.

I think all Contour strips use the same meter. The Freestyle Lite and Freestyle Neo use different strips.

All meters are required to have the same degree of accuracy. Some manufactures are going to make additional c

I've had the same Contour Next One meter for over 5 years now (and the one prior was so old it still had a Bayer logo). Being able to add more if you don't give enough of a sample is kinda nice. The FDA regulates accuracy on them, so either would be a fine choice.

If you want bluetooth, see if they'll cover a Contour with bluetooth. Or just buy one out of pocket. They're only $10-20 depending on model, and often come with strips. If you go out of pocket, look for whatever has the cheapest strips (just not from Amazon, Temu, etc). Walmart's ReliOn series has the cheapest strips I've seen, and their bluetooth version works with mySugr.

Contour Next has always been solid. Like most people here I have multiple meters but the Contour Next is my “daily carry”
