My grandma lives in an independent living facility in Wyoming. My uncle lives 1000 miles away but is the person that she asks for help with everything. I also live a long way from grandma. She has been t2 diabetic for 30+years, using an insulin pump for 20+ When she is sick she gets very high bs. La

Illness tends to raise glucose levels.

Unfortunately a lot of the common illness over the counter medications also raise glucose. Most medication has things that could spike our glucose or make it look spiked when it is not.

What I use for various things are:

  • Low doses of Tylenol for pain and fever [Caution: this can cause false highs on a CGM at higher doses]
  • Motrin for aches [Caution: blood thinner, can cause real lows at higher doses]
  • Chlortrimeton for sniffles, runny nose and sneezing
  • Mucinex for congestion
  • Ricola sugar free cough drops for sore throat and coughing [Caution: using a lot can cause gas and diarrhea]

I will stay hydrated with mint tea and water. Insulin needs may rise with illness.
