Weight difference is calories in vs. calories burned. If you eat more than you use, you gain weight. If you burn more than you eat, you lose weight.

Rule nr. 1: keep your BG controlled. Uncontrolled diabetes results in weight loss.

If that is taken care of: eat more calories than you burn. Eat calorically dense foods, which I know goes against the usual diabetic advice, but you need to eat nutrient rich foods. You can't gain weight trying to live off of lettuce and carrots.

I went from 60kg to 90kg with a good diet and weight lifting without much fat gain. It can be done!

Weight loss is your goez-ins are less than your goez-outs.

That's all it is. Every fancy diet plan in the world boils down to this. The good ones ensure you stay healthy throughout and don't deviate. Also that any deviation doesn't result in you going on a food-bender and never starting again.

Weight-gain diets also exist. Diabetics should avoid the carb-heavy ones I think.

Question for you OP. How long have you been diagnosed diabetic? My kid was not gaining weight between onset and diagnosis, just getting taller and skinnier. Once on insulin, kid started gaining weight and getting back to growth curve. Still a little on the tall end fo the charts, and lighter; making for a skinny kid, but not as bad as it was. If you're newly diagnosed, you should start gaining soon.
