Hi, I was wondering if any of you have experienced hair loss since being diagnosed with T1, I looked it up and I found that it’s a common thing but I don’t know how to treat it, I’ve been with insulin since the end of October and controlling my levels, but a few weeks ago my hair started falling and

My hair loss ended soon after starting insulin but not instantly. You’re still early in treatment so take a few more months to let your body adjust to your new blood sugar baseline. Some things get worse before they get better.

Oh so you were loosing hair before the diagnosis? I’ve read that is a common symptom but in my case it started after taking insulin

Returning to a lower blood sugar level is a huge shock to the body if you were at a high level for a long time. So possibly the issue will calm down later.

Same. Started after 15 years of insulin.

Get tested for thyroid disease. Hashimoto’s is very common in type 1 diabetics and was the cause of my hair loss

Topical minoxidil might be an option... but as a diabetic, discuss it with your healthcare team to make sure it won't cause cardiovascular risk, blood pressure risk, or interfere with meds. CoQ10, B-vitamins, and using more natural hair products can also help. Best of luck.

T1 here for 50 years. Still have lots of hair. On other hand, never bleached it.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism along with type 1 diabetes. Hypothyroidism causes hair loss.

Hard to say and you don't even mention what type of hair you have, (that probably doesn't matter)

African American female, I've been t1d for 36 years and my hair has never fallen out.

My 20yo daughter (non diabetic) however was diagnosed with alopecia areata back in the spring, after her hair started falling out and leaving bald spots in her head. She has no major health conditions, drinks plenty of water and eats her veggies. Took her to derm, they said auto immune gave her some meds and occasionally she gets steroid injections.

Oh yea, biotin (in the vitamin aisle) is the hair skin and nails vitamin.

Sorry to hear this. Your hair loss may be caused by anxiety or stress. Perhaps your diagnosis has caused you more worry, consciously or not. I have experienced alopecia twice, fortunately not the kind where I lost all my hair. Please see your doctor for an accurate diagnosis. You may need to see a trichology. I did.

Thanks. Yeah I’ve been stressed but I feel it might be something else, what did you do?

I saw my doctor who referred me to a tricologist. I had an injection in the area that was affected & eventually my hair grew back. Please get it checked out rather than try remedies yourself

Hello Kinky haired women here. I had the same issue. And I think they stopped falling after the honeymoon phase. Didn't particularly treat it as I was focused on my health. But minoxidil is the thing

I had it too, took vitamin D and it went away after a long time

26 years T1, in the late 50s, full head of hair....more likely genetics than T1.

Never heard of losing hair due to diabetes that new to me! Doubt that's why

I had crazy hair loss before I got diagnosed, took a while after starting insulin and getting things under control until it stopped falling and started growing back.

My hair grew in hella curly instead of the wavy I was used to, which apparently is a thing that can happen after a system shock like that.

Avocado helped me. And coconut oil.
