insulin not working

shared by: Little-Context4098 · · 💙 2 · 💬 7 · Join the discussion

I've noticed that no matter how much insulin I take in the last two days, my blood sugar won't go down, I have switched to a new insulin, drank enough water, and have enough exercise. Has anyone encountered this situation?

With respect to rule 6, please contact a medical professional. I am concerned if your insulin is not working to control your BG, you need medical attention.

Yes. The higher our glucose level goes, the more insulin resistant we become.

I find that eating a bit of cheese or meat with the correction bolus seems to trick my body into using the insulin. If that seems to not work, then I bolus, eat, drink water and walk 15 minutes.

Call your doctor.

How are you dosing? How are you measuring? Have you tested for ketones? (Blood or urine)

Was the insulin left in a container next to a space heater?

Experience with my kid showed that exercise with a lot of IOB causes plummeting glucose; but exercise without IOB has minimal impact. Ditto for hot baths. Adults performing sustained workouts may see different results.

If you're on a pump, your infusion set may be in a bad location on your body. Consider changing it early.

Regardless, you may need to up your insulin until your BG drops. The higher your BG, the more resistant you are. But how high are we talking here as compared to normal for you?

The higher your BG, the more resistant you are

Especially if you've been high enough, long enough, to start developing ketones. I think the endo told us to dose an extra 20% at "moderate" levels, and up to extra 100% at very high.

You need to see a doctor.

In my own experience, my insulin resistance skyrockets when I'm getting sick though.
